Peduncle silk originates from the cocoons of wild tropical Tussah Silkworms in India.
Silkworms feed on oak tree leaves and spin cocoons around branches, creating a stiff stem known as the peduncle.
Peduncles, nearly black and rich in sericin, are collected after moth emergence for processing.
Processing involves soaking, boiling, washing, drying, beating, and carding to remove excess sericin, yielding soft and lustrous fibers.
The resulting silk is strong and durable, suitable for various applications.
Known for its unique appearance and texture, less lustrous than Mulberry silk, with a dark natural color that can be dyed.
Its coarse and rough feel adds rustic charm.
Mainly produced in the sub-Himalayan belt and Maharashtra, reflecting the oak tasar culture.
Peduncle silk is a rare and valuable product showcasing the diversity and richness of Indian silk.
